What are post types on WordPress?

Short and sweet: Post Types are categories for your content.

WordPress uses post types for all content that is managed and displayed via it. Plugins and themes also make use of these post types and use them to display content.

These post types come standard with WordPress #

As a content management system, WordPress of course already provides you with a selection of post types that you can use to present your content on your website.

Of course, WordPress does not use the technical term here, but a term that everyone understands.

Posts, (Post-Type: post) #

Originally intended as a blogging system, it was obvious that a post type had to be used to categorize the content. Even today, the Post-Type is still used in blogs and articles of all kinds.

Pages (Post-Type: page) #

For WordPress to evolve into a content management system, it needed to provide the ability to manage individual pages. To make this possible, a new post type was added, “page”. With this post type, you can now read out all single pages of your website.

Media (Post-Type: attachment) #

Anything added to the WordPress media library is considered an “attachment”. Media can be added to posts and pages and also contain additional meta information about the work.

Revision (Post-Type: revision) #

All changes or previous versions of a post or page are saved as a revision. Revisions can be restored at any time in WordPress (depending on whether they have been enabled) and allow you to jump back to previous versions quickly and easily.

Menu items are also stored as post type in WordPress. Unlike pages and posts, however, they offer completely different input options. This shows how flexible Post-Types are.
